Immersive furniture design requires a complete digital value chain to be effective. The added value of this approach can only be realised if the various stakeholders – consumers, designers and producers – have constant access to digital representations and tools to manipulate the concepts and designs. Virtual
reality used in the design phase of the process allows designers to create in a different way. It introduces the possibility of using natural gestures to design products to scale, and combines manufacturing technologies to create hybrid furniture, with some parts made by traditional word-working and other
parts made by additive manufacturing. This nugget presents a case study of the use of immersive technologies in the furniture design process, integrated into an open design demonstration
platform.
Learning outcomes
- By the end of the module, learners can describe the complete value chain of an immersive design approach
- By the end of the module, learners can explain the functions of the software used in that immersive design value chain
