This nugget provides basic training on the role of IoT in Industry 4.0/5.0, with specific focus on how IoT enables the design and implementation of digital twins for manufacturing. The nugget defines the features of a digital twin and presents the concepts of hybrid (i.e., simulation-driven and data-driven) and distributed digital twin (i.e., running in the cloud continuum). Those concepts are illustrated with the practical example of a digital twin for predictive maintenance for wind turbines.

Learning outcomes

  1. At the end of the nugget the learner is able to give a clear and technically precise definition of digital twins, also in comparison with digital models and digital shadows.
  2. At the end of the nugget the learner is able to understand the technical differences between Industry 4.0 and Industry 5.0, in particular when related to the usage and application of digital twin solutions.
  3. At the end of the nugget the learner is able to contrast the digital twins exclusively based on physical models (simulation-based digital twins), the ones exclusively based on big data analytics from industrial sensors, and the most effective ones employing a combination of the two techniques.
