Large Language Models (LLMs) are revolutionizing Human-Machine Interaction (HMI) in production environments by enhancing how machines and humans communicate and collaborate. LLMs, which are advanced AI models trained on vast amounts of text data, are increasingly being integrated into industrial systems to improve processes such as code generation, natural language interfaces, and automation system design. This learning nugget provides an in-depth exploration of how LLMs function, their applications in industrial settings, and the current limitations of this technology. Through real-world case studies and a focus on practical implementation, participants will gain a thorough understanding of LLMs’ potential to transform production workflows and address the complexities involved in deploying these models effectively.

About The Author

The authors are research associates at the Institute for Production Management, Technology and Machine Tools at the Technical University of Darmstadt in Germany. The focus of the institute is the trend-setting production of tomorrow and it is divided into the four research groups Manufacturing Technology (TEC), Energy Technologies and Applications in Production (ETA), Center for Industrial Productivity (CIP) and Management of Industrial Production (MIP).

The authors are related to the research group Manufacturing Technology which focuses on processes and process chains, machine tools, industrial robots, connectivity & communication of production systems and process planning and monitoring. The research group study additive and subtractive manufacturing processes and their linking. Real industrial machine tools are used in a production environment for the research at the institute. The research focus of the authors themselves are AI applications in production for milling machines and turning machines.
