This lesson will give a brief introduction to the milling process, explaining its main components. In addition, considering the kinematic complexity of the process, we will go deeper into the movements that take place by discretising the cutting and feed movements. The concept of the degree of freedom and its influence on the movements involved in milling is also explained.

About The Authors

The authors Pedro Arrazola, Harry Otalora and Gorka Ortiz de Zarate have extensive knowledge on process planning, with more than 15 years of experience. In addition, they have worked closely with industry in Spain (Fagor Ederlan, Zubiola etc.), Germany, etc. to assist them in process planning issues, including thesis of the research group that have been developed in this topic.

Learning outcomes

  1. By the end of this lesson, students will be able to identify the main components of the milling process, including the machine tool, cutting tool, clamping system, and raw stock material.
  2. By the end of this lesson, students will be able to recognize the importance of both cutting and feed movements in achieving the desired part shape in milling operations.
  3. By the end of this lesson, students will be able to explain how the cutter’s rotation is responsible for cutting speed and material removal during the milling process.
