Cutting Fluids for Green Machining

Type of course:

Digital learning, Lesson

Language:

Duration:

20 minutes

Workload:

2 hours

Proficiency:

Intermediate

Target:

Professionals, Workers, Students

Machining is an important segment in the manufacturing industry to produce engineered parts and components. Most high value-added products include machining among its processing steps. The cutting
mechanics makes necessary the use of cutting fluids that contribute to machining competitiveness through higher part quality and extended tool life. But cutting fluids, because of their formulations, also show negative effects on health and the environment and even on sustainability goals. Current alternatives for a greener manufacturing by reducing the impact of conventional machining cutting fluids are presented. No definitive substitutes to widely used cutting fluids are available today. Alternatives show limitations yet and can be applied under limited conditions. Nevertheless, technology development continues progressing.

Learning outcomes

  1. To learn what are cutting fluids used for in machining
  2. To know which cutting operations and materials are most critical in terms of cutting fluids usage
  3. To understand the relevance of green and sustainable cutting fluids and identify which technologies are key to get them

Topics

Environmental Sustainability, Advanced Manufacturing, Sustainable Energy and Clean Technologies, Sustainable Manufacturing, CNC Machining
