This nugget will focus on two key markets for emission reductions or compensation: the market for energy attributes certificates (EACs); to reduce Scope 2 emissions, and voluntary carbon offset markets to balance emissions from all scopes. We will discuss their functioning, the current and expected future price trends, and ongoing initiatives shaping these markets.
Learning outcomes
- Understand how renewable energy is traded and how companies can certify that their energy consumption is 100% from renewable sources
- Know the different types of carbon offsets, how they are used by companies, the most popular projects to date and upcoming negative emission technologies, and be aware of the properties of high quality carbon offsets and the risks of greenwashing posed by some types of certificates.
- Recognize the role of third party registries (VERRA, Gold Standard, etc.) in regulating and mediating carbon offset markets, and be conscious of the limitations of these markets and of the long-term risks of a decarbonization strategy that heavily relies on these indirect emission reduction markets.
