A sensor is a device that produces an output signal for the purpose of sensing of a physical phenomenon. In the broadest definition, a sensor is a device, module, machine, or subsystem that detects events or changes in its environment and sends the information to other electronics, frequently a computer processor. The list of sensors is a long one. Almost every physical property has its respective sensors. Some sensors are also used to measure changes in environmental conditions or health conditions.
Learning outcomes
- Identify the most common types and categories of sensors
- Evaluate a problem and select a sensor according to the problem's definition
- Apprehend common condition monitoring technologies and the role of sensors on them
