This lesson provides a comprehensive overview of key concepts in IoT systems. Learners will understand the role of middleware in facilitating communication, data management, and security services. They will evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of blockchain technology in IoT applications and explore different types of IoT middleware, such as Application Enablement Platforms (AEPs) and Message-Oriented Middleware (MOM), and their functionalities.

Learning outcomes

  1. At the end of this lesson the learner will be able to explain the role of middleware in IoT systems, including how it operates as a layer of software facilitating communication, data management, device management, and security services between IoT devices and applications.
  2. At the end of this lesson the learner will be able to valuate the advantages and disadvantages of blockchain technology, considering its impact on accuracy, decentralization, security, privacy, and transparency, as well as the associated costs and limitations such as computational requirements and transaction throughput.
  3. At the end of this lesson the learner will be able to describe the different types of IoT middleware, including Application Enablement Platforms (AEPs), Integration middleware, Gateway middleware, and Message-Oriented Middleware (MOM), and explain their respective functionalities in facilitating IoT application development, data translation, local processing, and message-based communication.
