Fused deposition modeling (FDM) is one of the most widely used additive manufacturing techniques.  In FDM, a part is manufactured by selectively depositing thermoplastic polymer filament, layer by layer in a path defined by the CAD model. Due to its high accuracy, low cost, and large material selection, FDM is one of the most widely used 3D printing technologies in the world. In this nugget, the learner will be presented with a video, demonstrating and discussing the workflow of an FDM-produced (Material extrusion) part from CAD model to Print. Furthermore, the challenges associated with this additive manufacturing technique and this type of material.

Learning outcomes

  1. Implement the required design stages for filament deposition via AM
  2. Implement the generic practices followed using software for design of multi-materials
  3. Identify and utilize appropriate quality assessment methods to achieve desired product quality using FDM
