Throughout this learning module, we’ll explore the interconnection of fundamental decarbonization concepts, starting from how Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions contribute to an organization’s carbon footprint, how net-zero strategies and targets (for instance aligned with the Science-Based Targets initiative, SBTi) drive sustainable actions, and how disclosures via international organizations such as the CDP enhance environmental transparency.

Learning outcomes

  1. Define and differentiate between Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 emissions. Compare and contrast the direct and indirect nature of emissions in relation to organizational activities and the challenges in tackling them.
  2. Understand the difference between carbon neutral and net zero strategies and how the guidelines from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) align with the latest climate science for decarbonization strategies.
  3. Develop a clear understanding of the role of transparency regarding emission data and actions, and the role of the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) in promoting accountability in environmental reporting.
