We all work in teams. A definition of a team, as a shared mantra, helps us to start with the same mental model of what a TEAM is. A group of people does not become a team overnight, nor does it happen by magic. This transition takes time and goes through different stages. Identifying the different stages a team goes through helps us to better understand what is happening in the team and what could be done.
Tuckman’s theory suggests that teams go through 5 stages of development: forming, storming, norming, performing and adjourning.
The aim of this nugget is to provide a definition of a team, introduce the different stages of team development and explain the characteristics of each stage. Finally, some guidelines for the team leader and team members in each stage.
