This learning path focuses on collecting the information needed to conduct an accurate life cycle analysis. Users will learn about common methodologies and data sources used in life cycle assessment, including interviews, questionnaires, process data and emission inventories. It focuses also on environmental impact indicators used in life cycle assessment. Students will explore several common indicators, such as greenhouse gas emissions, water use, acidification, and soil erosion. Methods for aggregating indicators to obtain an overall environmental impact assessment will also be examined.
Through this course, learners will gain a sound understanding of data collection and impact indicators used in life cycle assessment. They will know how to collect accurate and relevant data and how to interpret impact indicators to make informed and sustainable decisions in the context of the environmental impact of products and processes.
Learning outcomes
- By the end of the module, learners are able to set up the life cycle assessment of a production process or product.
- By the end of the module, learners are able to identify the inventory data needed to properly conduct an environmental impact assessment, capturing critical information to be collected and ways to solve the issue.
- By the end of the module, learners are able to select most significant environmental impact indicators to be used for life cycle assessment, based on assessment objectives.
