Soft robotics is a specialised field of robotics that deals with the design, manufacture and use of robots and robotic components made of flexible and resilient materials. Unlike traditional rigid robots, soft robots are characterised by their ability to deform, bend and adapt to their environment.
In this learning path, the fundamentals of soft robotics are displayed, and the advantages of the concept of soft robotics are presented. It provides an overview on soft robotics components and materials, and focuses on the design of soft robotic systems. You will also learn about soft robotic design principles, and look at manufacturing solutions for soft robotics components with a specific focus on Additive Manufacturing. Design guidelines will be presented to enable you to design simple soft robotic components considering both, functionality and manufacturability.
Learning outcomes
- The participant will be able to explain the differences between soft- and hard robotics and identify applications, that would benefit from soft robotics. The learner will be able to discuss soft components which could replace stiff ones during the re-design process of a robotic system.
- The participant will be able to summarize basic soft components with focus on soft actuators and typical practical applications in real-world scenarios. The learner will be able to discuss viable materials for soft robotic components.
- The participant will be able to identify a viable fabrication process and name respective design guidelines.
