Mobile 3D Scanning for product design

By Arts et Métiers Institute of Technology

Type of course:

Digital learning, Path

Language:

EN

Duration:

1 hour, 10 minutes

Workload:

6 hours

Proficiency:

Intermediate

Target:

Professionals

The Learning path describes technologies for 3D scanning environments with Smartphones, and methodologies to integrate mobile 3D scanning in co-creation processes. It targets especially product designers who need the contextual information of the place where the product is deployed to better communicate in early design phases, and reduce the design errors. It will target especially furniture designers, and assist them in implementing co-creation processes facilitating on-demand furniture creation, towards a more sustainable society. It provides the necessary skills to reorganise the digital communication and collaboration using 3D scan data. This data is essential for remote collaboration and virtual design meetings. It first evaluates the level of the learner on this topic and provides theoretical and practical keys to scan an environment.  Some background is presented on Augmented Reality scanning, Lidar sensors, photogrammetry and NERF techniques use on mobile phone. Learners can evaluate different techniques and understand the advantages and limitations of each technology. Consequently, learners can implement the appropriate scanning techniques for their own use case and industrial context.

Learning outcomes

  1. By the end of the module, Learners are able to explain the capabilities of mobile phones to scan places and objects using Lidar, photogrammetry or NERF techniques.
  2. By the end of the module, Learners are able to justify the use of one scanning technology for future use cases (type of place, object, light conditions, materials conditions...) and deploy a digital value chain using this data.
  3. By the end of the module, Learners are able to implement the appropriate scanning technique in their own on-demand design process, facilitating on-demand furniture manufacturing.
